Sport acquatico di origine polinesiana, praticato specialmente lungo le spiagge dell’Australia e dell’America. Consiste in velocissime planate compiute mantenendosi in piedi sul surf, una tavola (in schiuma di poliuretano espanso rivestita in vetroresina), fornita sul lato inferiore di tre pinne terminali, trasportata da grandi onde dal largo verso la riva. Le dimensioni della tavola (in genere comprese tra 2 e 3 m) variano a seconda della categoria e della statura dell’atleta, nonché delle condizioni ambientali. Il surf è praticato e largamente diffuso anche solo per diporto, senza cioè alcun fine agonistico, anche se esistono diverse competizioni. Ci sono inoltre delle varianti del s. nelle quali l’atleta, utilizzando apposite tavole (di diverse forme e dimensioni), si posiziona sulle ginocchia o con il corpo disteso.

You will experience the power of the waves! The size of the board ( between 2 and 3 m) varies according to the category and stature of the athlete, as well as environmental conditions. There are also variations of surfing: using special boards (of different shapes and sizes), the athlete lies down or stands on his or her knees.

Viareggio è ritenuta la culla del surf italiano. È qui che si sono svolte le prime gare ufficiali, dove è stato aperto il primo negozio specializzato, dove è nato il primo surf club e dove ha avuto sede per lunghi anni la federazione italiana.
